Scalp psoriasis is a kind of plaque psoriasis occurring on the scalp. This skin condition can occur anywhere over the body. Its occurrence over any part of body is usually termed as plaque psoriasis however, when it develops on the skin of your head i.e. scalp it is termed as scalp psoriasis.

Psoriasis usually is the result of over reproduction of the skin cells resulting in the dried and reddish patches of the thickened skin. The areas usually affected by psoriasis are scalp, elbows and knees. In case when psoriasis occurs on the scalp, the patches of scales appear on the scalp having red and raised appearance.

The reason for the development of scalp psoriasis remains unknown. However, the studies have shown that there are many factors involved in the development of this skin condition. The factors, as reported till now, are of environmental as well as genetic nature.

The people who have developed plaque psoriasis are at increased risk for developing scalp psoriasis.

Scalp psoriasis is a non-contagious skin condition. Studies conducted with regard to this condition are evident that it is of non-curable and chronic nature. However, the condition does not remain constant and keep worsening and improving, periodically.

The factors which may contribute in the worsening of the condition are

  • Colder seasons
  • Changing climates
  • Decreased exposure to sunlight etc

Psoriasis is common around the world so, it cannot be attached to specific race, gender or age.

The appearance of scalp psoriasis patches is not restricted to any specific portion of the scalp rather they can appear anywhere. The pattern of appearance of the psoriasis varies. The patterns, till now reported are:

  • A spot
  • Multiple patches at some portion
  • Appearance of patches over the entire scalp
  • Appearance of patches/ spots over the forehead
  • Appearance of patches/spots behind the neck

The patches and spots may appear in following shapes:

  • Reddish plaque
  • Silvery- white scales
  • Flakes
  • Dry Scalp
  • Itching
  • Soreness accompanied with burning sensations

Along with the development of the scalp psoriasis, hair loss can also be experienced. The hair loss can be of temporary nature and is due to frequent and intense scratching.

The treatment of the psoriasis is generally done with the oral medications and creams to be applied directly on the skin. Sometimes, injections are also administered while the conditions are worsened.

Along with the medications, light therapy or phototherapy is also employed. Light therapy is of several kinds and has shown to come up with remarkably reliving results.

Scalp psoriasis is a skin condition of chronic and inflammatory nature, but is not contagious. This condition though is not curable but controllable with proper administration of medication. The causation of this skin condition till now, remain uncovered so, studies are being conducted to uncover the underlying "master trigger" of this skin condition.
